The goal of the NCBP Diversity & Inclusion Committee is to strengthen the alliance between associations of all kinds where information is shared and cooperation is enhanced to the benefit of the organized bar, the profession, and society as a whole. Understanding that some bars may not have budgeted for participation in an NCBP Annual or Midyear Meeting, the NCBP Executive Council has established Diversity Scholarships, for the Annual and Midyear Meetings, in order to reach out to a broader range of bar leaders, including leaders of associations for lawyers of color, women attorneys, LGBT attorneys, lawyers with physical challenges, as well as smaller county and metro bar associations.
2017-2018 Diversity Scholarship Benefits
The NCBP Executive Council has established a scholarship for diversity leaders. This scholarship includes the following benefits:
- Registration fee waiver for the NCBP Annual and Midyear Meetings (a more than $500 value per meeting for officers of nonmember bar associations)
- An additional stipend of up to $500 for travel expenses for each meeting.
- Inclusion in one or more NCBP Committees
- Free membership in NCBP for one year (unless your bar is already a member of NCBP)
By providing these benefits, the NCBP Diversity Scholars will be exposed to a wide-range of bar leaders, who can candidly share their successes and failures in their leadership roles and be available for open dialogue on all issues. Through this process, the Diversity Scholars will develop their own leadership style and learn how to put that style into action, as well as providing national networking opportunities with other bar leaders.
The Application Process
The NCBP Diversity & Inclusion Committee is accepting applicants for the 2017-2018 Diversity Scholarship.
Scholarship recipients must attend all NCBP programming provided during the NCBP Annual and Midyear Meetings; those who do not attend NCBP events may be asked to repay their scholarship. Scholarship applications are open to any of the following individuals:
1. Officers of any of the following types of bar associations:
a) State or local bar for women lawyers
b) State or local bar for LGBT lawyers
c) State or local bar for lawyers of color
d) Other minority or affinity bar associations
d) Small local bars with under 1,000 members
2. Bar Leaders who otherwise would be financially unable to attend. This can occur from a number of factors including the size and type of bar association, the annual budget of the association and the capacity of the organization to provide professional development training on its own.
3. Bar Leaders who represent an association of at least 100 members.
4. Bar Leaders who, by their participation, would improve the diversity of the NCBP.
5. Those who have not attended an NCBP Annual or Midyear Meeting in the past five years.
An applicant need not satisfy all of the criteria specified above.
