Congratulations to the Family of John Bouma, 2020 NCBP Fellows Award Recipient
John J. Bouma, an honorable advocate on behalf of his clients, always endeavoring to be fair, demonstrating a genuine respect for all, working to elevate the standards of the profession with humility and integrity, was awarded the 2020 NCBP Fellows Award posthumously. John Bouma passed away on January 22, 2019, after a long and distinguished legal career and a record of outstanding service to his community.
After serving as a Captain in the United States Army Judge Advocate General's Corps, Mr. Bouma joined Snell & Wilmer in 1962 and built a celebrated career. He was named firm chair in 1983 and led the firm for more than 30 years, remaining active in his practice after officially retiring and continuing to serve on the firm's Executive and Compensation Committees.
Mr. Bouma served as the leader of many organizations, including as the Phoenix Association of Defense Counsel President from 1970 to 1971; President of the Maricopa County Bar Association from 1977 to 1988; President of the State Bar of Arizona from 1983 to 1984; Arizona Bar Foundation President from 1987 to 1988; President of the National Conference of Bar Presidents from 1989 to 1990; Arizona State University Law Society President from 1999 to 2000; and Vice-President of the Iowa Law School Foundation from 1996 to 2003.
Mr. Bouma was very active with the American Bar Association as well, serving as a member of the ABA House of Delegates and its Board of Governors; Chair of the Standing Committee on Bar Activities and Services from 1991 to 1993; a member of the ABA Journal Editorial Board from 1996 to 1998; a member of the Litigation Trial Attorney Advisory Board from 2010 to 2016; and serving on a host of other ABA sections, committees and commissions.
Mr. Bouma served the Phoenix community as well, as President of the Phoenix Art Museum and the Arizona Opera, and on the Boards of Directors for the Art Museum, Valley of the Sun United Way, and Greater Phoenix Leadership; he served as co-founder of the Arizona Equal Justice Campaign, Wildlife for Tomorrow, and the Partnership for a Drug-Free America, Arizona Chapter; having the lobby of the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law named after him in recognition of his contributions to the school and the community during his more than five decades as a practicing attorney.
Mr. Bouma's law partner at Snell & Wilmer, Matt Feeney, will accept the award on behalf of the Bouma family on Friday, February 14, 2020, during the NCBP Joint Awards Luncheon at the 2020 Midyear Meeting in Austin, TX.
