21st Century Lawyer Virtual Session - April 19, 2017

All Politics Is Local, Part 2 – Six Degrees of Separation

In June 2016, government relations experts Ken Goldsmith (Senior Legislative Counsel and Director for State Legislation at the American Bar Association) and Leah Johnson (Assistant Executive Director for the South Carolina Bar), presented a program on 21st Century Lawyer on "All Politics is Local - A practical Guide to Effective Advocacy for State and Local Bars." Join Ken and Leah again on April 19, 207, for a fascinating look at how to capitalize on your role as a bar leader to advocate for your profession - just in time for ABA Day in Washington, DC, April 25-27.

With the recent threats to judicial independence, the de-funding of the Legal Services Corporation, and lawyers being called upon to help with immigration issues, local and state bar leaders need to be ready to advocate on behalf of the legal profession on issues of great importance – not just to lawyers, but to the community and the country as a whole. ABA Day is held each year in the spring to take this message to Congress. The same happens in state capitols across the country every year.

How, as a bar leader, can you promote public policy that furthers the interests of justice, promotes the legal profession, and establishes the rule of law? You need to capitalize on your role as a local community leader, lawyer and constituent. Ken Goldsmith and Leah Johnson, will share with you the best ways to make the most of your current connections, create new connections, and build those all-important relationships with lawmakers.
